Look at the ingredients of any popular food product in your fridge or larder and one ingredient that is ever present but, for the most, wholly unnecessary, is sugar. In it many guises, sugar is present in; cereals, bread, ready meals, sauces, soups, fruit juices, baked beans and many other common food stuffs. Some of the common names sugar derivative use are - glucose, sucrose, fructose and maltose. In its most recognisable form, white and granular, sugar can be as addictive as nicotine or drugs.
Made in such a way that strips it of its any useful molecular components; vitamins, minerals, proteins and enzymes. The sweet substance left after the process has no beneficial effect on the body.
Natural sugars are not all bad, it is produced naturally in fruit and some foodstuffs would be inedible without it as an ingredient. However much of the food and drink we consume in the western world is laced with an unnecessary amount of sugar, with many a palate having got use to a certain sweetness in foods from a young age. Beside the known effect of sugar - erosion of teeth and gums, weight gain, excessive insulin production in the body, that can lead to diabetes - the effects can be psychological as well as physiological. Excess sugar is known to cause mood swings, the peak and trough of sugar highs and lows, something which can be evidenced in children in the modern day with their highly processed diets. As mentioned before, the process by which granular sugar is made strips of everything, making an incomplete “food” for the body, hence when ingested the body has to “complete” it molecularly so as to digest it. The body does this by drawing from bones and organs, which is a bit like working backwards! For more info click here.
In conclusion, a reduction in the intake of sugar can be beneficial for both body and mind.
